Each day is different and each day is the same

It’s been a long ass time since I last wrote. I guess, I quit writing because I figured nobody ever read my blog. Plus, all I do is write for the Army and it’s tough to write. So, I will sum up the last month.

Went home on leave
Our interpreter and my good friend, Samir, was killed by terrorists
Got promoted
Seen more combat than I would have liked
Lots and lots of mortars
And a few smiles

As I’m sure anyone can imagine, it’s very difficult being away from home. We’ve been here nine or 10 months now, and each day is different and each day is the same. Some days we get mortared the hell out of. Some days I get shot at. Some days I look forward to going into the palace to work. Some days I hate it. Some days I go out with the infantry or special forces to cover combat operations. And some days, I eat enough food to feed an entire African village. Some days I eat nothing at all.

Today, we are wrapping up a magazine at which I am managing to give to a brigade so they can pass out to soldiers and family members. I’ve always wondered how much our photos and stories are appreciated, because the only time we get feedback is when we misspell somebody’s name or misquote somebody. I guess you could say, I’m tired. I’m tired of being in a country where some people want to kill me. Thinking about whether I will wake up the next day or not can get really old after a year. But, I am a soldier and damn proud to be one. And each day, I find a way to make it thru. Each day I find a way to stay motivated. And each day I look forward to the last day.
